Common questions
What does "depth-limited" mean on this page?
It means a venue's visible order book doesn't hold enough liquidity within our depth cutoff to fill the requested size without moving price further than we're willing to extrapolate. Rather than estimate past that point, we flag the row as depth-limited and exclude it from the ranking.
What is the 2%-of-mid depth cutoff, and why does it exist?
We only simulate a fill using order-book levels within 2% of the mid price. Beyond that, books usually thin out and conditions can shift fast enough that extending the walk further would produce a number that looks precise but isn't trustworthy — so we stop and mark the row instead of guessing.
Why does the cheapest venue for a small order stop being the cheapest at $10M?
Fees are a flat percentage regardless of size, but order-book depth is not evenly distributed — some venues post plenty of liquidity near the mid and little beyond it, while others carry deeper books further out. A large order walks past the thin part of the book, so slippage, not fee, usually decides the ranking at this size.
How is slippage actually calculated for a $10M order?
We take the live order-book levels and simulate filling the full $10M against them level by level, then compute the volume-weighted average price of that simulated fill against the mid price. The difference, in basis points, is the slippage figure — it reflects the book at the moment of measurement, not a historical average.
Should I expect to actually get this price on a real $10M order?
Treat it as an estimate of execution cost at the moment of measurement, not a guarantee. Books move between our sample and your order, some venues will requote or partially fill very large orders, and splitting an order across time or venues — which this page doesn't model — can change your real result.
